Your flight has just been cancelled at approximately 10:00 PM at ORD. The gate agent has made the announcement. You are stranded overnight and need to figure out what to do next. · Estimated total: Steps 1-7 (night of cancellation): 60-120 minutes. Steps 8-9 (morning/after): 60-90 minutes plus flight time.
DO NOT leave the gate area yet. The gate agent is your first and best resource. While waiting in line, use the airline app to check rebooking options. The app sometimes shows flights the gate agent hasn't mentioned. If you can rebook yourself on the app, do it immediately — seats go fast. Take screenshots of any rebooking confirmation.
(1) Is this cancellation within the airline's control (maintenance/crew) or weather-related? This determines voucher eligibility. (2) Can you rebook me on the first flight tomorrow morning? Ask for a confirmed seat, not standby. (3) Will the airline provide a hotel voucher AND meal voucher? (4) If no hotel voucher, can the airline at least provide transportation to a hotel? Write down the agent's name and the reason given for cancellation.
DO NOT wait — nearby hotels fill up FAST during mass cancellations. Priority order: (1) Hilton O'Hare (walkable from T1, +1-773-686-8000), (2) Marriott O'Hare (+1-773-693-4444), (3) Hyatt Regency O'Hare (+1-847-696-1234), (4) Any Rosemont area hotel with shuttle. Mention you're a stranded passenger — some hotels offer distressed passenger rates. If the airline gave you a hotel voucher, confirm the hotel accepts it.
By now (~10:30 PM), most airport concessions are closed. Options: (a) Vending machines — all terminals have them, (b) McDonald's T2 landside if open (unreliable), (c) Rideshare to Denny's (9150 W Higgins Rd, 24/7) or Steak 'n Shake (10200 W Higgins Rd, 24/7) — ~$8-12 each way. If the airline gave you meal vouchers, use them before concessions close.
For overnight cancellations, ALWAYS retrieve checked bags unless the airline explicitly and confidently confirms they will be transferred. Bags left on cancelled flights can be difficult to retrieve the next day. Go to baggage claim and wait for your bag. If the bag doesn't appear, go to your airline's baggage service office (in the baggage claim area).
Hotel shuttle pickup: go to the lower level (baggage claim/arrivals), follow signs for 'Hotel Shuttles', find your hotel's designated door/pickup point, call the hotel if shuttle hasn't arrived in 20 minutes. Hilton: walk via underground walkway from Terminal 1 (follow 'Hilton' signs). Rideshare: pickup at designated rideshare areas on lower level.
Before sleeping: (a) Check your airline app — confirm your rebooked flight is still showing, (b) Set alarm for at least 2 hours before your new flight (to allow for hotel shuttle, security line, and walking to gate), (c) Check if hotel has breakfast and what time it starts, (d) Confirm shuttle schedule for morning — know exactly when the next shuttle leaves.
Hotel shuttles run on schedule in the morning — don't miss it. TSA checkpoints reopen 3:30-4:00 AM. Morning security lines build by 5:00 AM — the earlier you arrive, the better. If your hotel has free breakfast, eat before leaving. If not, grab food at the terminal after clearing security (concessions open by 5:00-6:00 AM).
Save ALL receipts (hotel, meals, transportation, toiletries). Take photos of receipts. If the cancellation was within the airline's control, submit a reimbursement claim on the airline's website within 30 days. Include: date, flight number, cancellation reason (as told by gate agent), and all receipts. Also check your credit card's trip delay insurance — many premium cards cover up to $500 per ticket for delays over 6 hours.
Most common mistake:
Waiting in the gate agent line and doing nothing else. Multi-task: app + line + hotel booking simultaneously. Nearby hotels fill within 30 minutes of a mass cancellation announcement.
Travelers Aid Chicago is a volunteer-based nonprofit organization that operates help desks at O'Hare International Airport. They are the closest thing to an official stranded passenger assistance service at ORD. Their mission is to help travelers in distress — whether lost, stranded, separated from family, or overwhelmed.

Free Wi-Fi
Free Wi-Fi at ORD (no password required, session lasts 30 minutes with option to renew) — Generally reliable but can slow during peak hours. Streaming may be limited. Adequate for email, messaging, and web browsing.
Charging Stations
Good — charging stations available in all terminals
Bring a multi-port USB charger — many outlets are shared. The best overnight charging spots are in the Terminal 2 mezzanine area (near chapel) and Hilton lobby.
Cots & Blankets
Not officially provided
During major weather events or mass cancellations, cots have been observed set up in Terminal 2 walkways, but this is ad hoc and not guaranteed.
