Midway (MDW) is much smaller than O'Hare — a single terminal with three concourses you can walk between without leaving security. It's also far more Southwest-heavy: Southwest operates roughly 80% of MDW traffic. That one fact shapes almost every recovery decision here.
At MDW, assume you're on Southwest and move accordingly. Open the Southwest app and get in the gate agent line at the same time — the airline app is usually the fastest way to rebook.
The same U.S. DOT baseline applies at MDW: airlines are not required to provide hotels or meals for weather- or ATC-caused disruptions. For controllable issues, policies vary.
Southwest is different — see the details
MDW has no designated rest areas or sleep pods, and security closes overnight (roughly 9–10 PM, reopening 3:30–4 AM). You can remain landside, but comfort is low — hard seating, bright lights, and overnight cleaning noise.
All but one of the nearby hotels offer free shuttles from the lower level (arrivals), typically every 20–30 minutes. There is no indoor walkway — you must go outside for pickup.
Midway concessions close early — by roughly 8–9 PM, and nothing is open overnight inside the terminal.
